Our Community & Tradition
Hakubai Zen Center offers practice in the Soto tradition of Japan, in the lineage of Tenzan Keibun Daiosho, Houn Kobun Chino Roshi, and Martin Mosko Roshi.
Our name, Hakubai (white plum), evokes the beauty of opening in winter and the spirit of Zen practice—finding awakening even in the coldest season.
We sit together in a beautiful garden setting at the foot of the Flatirons in Boulder, Colorado. Whether you are new to Zen or have practiced for many years, you are warmly welcome to join our community. Through zazen (sitting meditation), we explore the depth of our being and cultivate compassion for all beings.
Our practice is rooted in the teachings of the Buddha and the direct transmission of Zen dharma through our teachers. We believe that practice is for everyone—no special ability or background is required, only the willingness to sit and return to the present moment.
Our teachers carry the transmission of Zen practice in the lineage of Houn Kobun Chino Roshi and Tenzan Keibun Daiosho. They are dedicated to supporting your practice.
We are part of a larger Zen community. Our sister centers share in the same lineage and practice tradition.
Hakubai Zen Center is governed by a board of directors committed to the center's mission of offering authentic Zen practice in the Soto tradition. Our governance structure ensures transparency, accountability, and the long-term sustainability of our community.
The board oversees the center's operations, finances, and strategic direction. Board members serve in a volunteer capacity and are selected for their commitment to the center and its community.
Hakubai operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our bylaws and policies guide the center's operations and ensure we maintain the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

Hakubai's beautiful grounds and facilities are available for rental by groups, retreats, and special events. Our award-winning garden provides a serene and inspiring setting for meditation, workshops, ceremonies, and gatherings.
We are currently able to offer only limited rental opportunities because of our preparation for construction of our new temple. For information, please contact us.
